RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Have you waited hours for a repairman to arrive to fix an appliance? Have you paid more than you think you should? A new company is test marketing in Richmond. Repair.com says it can save you time and money.
You've probably seen the company's humorous ads with the tag line, "Being the man is as easy as calling the man."
Homeowner John Hoke did. When his refrigerator started leaking, he called Repair.com.
"I thought it would be a good way to go rather than a normal repair man," Hoke told us. "I've had some bad experiences in the past."
Repair.com sent him local repairman Dexter Frederick. "I've been in the repair business for over 12 years now, and I've been serving the Richmond area for the same time."
Repair.com serves as the middleman. You call them, they contract with local repair people, and set your appointment.
"The repair person will give you a call before the appointment and triage the problem. That way they can order parts ahead of time. This enables us to fix over 80% of jobs on the first trip," explained Repair.com's Cameron Caswell.
At your home, the repair person diagnoses the problem and quotes your cost. But you don't have to have the repair done.
"That's fine, no cost to you," said Caswell. "Typically it would cost $85, $100 for someone to do that. You could put that money toward a new appliance."
Repairs the company makes are guaranteed for a year. And they vet the repairmen.
"They're background checked. We pre-screen them to make sure they're licensed and insured," said Caswell.
Hoke says it saved him from waiting hours for a repairman to arrive. "It's been very smooth. I called and the guy was very professional and said they'd be out here the next day and they were."
Repair.com is based in Sterling, Virginia. It's parent company is N.E.W. Customer Service, a 30-year-old company that also books repairs for customers who have extended warranties on their appliances.
