Chesterfield County converts cars to liquid propane, saves money

Posted: Updated:

Chesterfield County is trying out a new green approach to fueling. The county is in the process of converting cars to liquid propane as an alternative to gasoline.

Several police cruisers were some of the first on the list for the conversion. The cars cost about $6,000 to convert, but officials say the savings are seen very quickly.

"I'm looking for return on investment in two years max per vehicle from the cost savings on the fuel," said Jeff Jeter, Fleet Director for Chesterfield County. "And like I tell everybody, we need to look at more than just the cost from the fuel."

"We're excited about it because we've seen the success in other departments across the country in fuel savings and reduce of maintenance costs," said Major Dan Kelly, with the Chesterfield Police Department. "Improving the life cycle of a vehicle, which is very important to our citizens and to our officers."

There are more than 500 police officers in Chesterfield. Last year, they drove 9.3 million miles. Officials say this conversion can save Chesterfield County about $2 per gallon on fuel.
