A person was stabbed at Virginia State University during a series of large fights on campus.
A fight broke out between the football stadium and gymnasium, near the basketball courts around 5:45 p.m. One person was stabbed, but police have not confirmed if that person was a student. He was sent to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Several other fights broke out around campus following the stabbing, but there are currently no other reports of injuries.
Hundreds of people were on campus Wednesday to participate in a homecoming event. The fights broke out just as the festivities were winding down.
"We do have several witnesses to the incidents who have come forward and it's far to early to say if any kind of action will occur right now," said University spokesperson, Tom Reed. He believes there could be one witness who may have caught the suspect on camera. "A suspect may have been identified on video but again, the investigation is ongoing."
Investigators are now pouring over campus security video and images on social media.
VSU was on lockdown until Thursday morning. Classes are running on schedule.
