New RRHA board chairman comments on police situation

On many levels, there is still confusion about what happened inside the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority Police Department that led to the sudden and unexpected suspension of Chief Hal Hazelton. At this point, sources say he is still on administrative leave.

RRHA Commissioner Sam Young agreed to talk to NBC12 on his way into Wednesday night's board meeting where he was voted in as the new chairman. He told us the situation is still being handled by human resources and the agency CEO. Young explains commissioners were notified and he believes so was the public.

"I'm not exactly sure what steps were taken, but I do know we took steps," he said.

But many of the people who live in some of Richmond's poorest and most dangerous communities have expressed concern about how this all went down.

"I do think with us not being used to the press coming around quite a bit we could do a better job of communicating without looking like we're running from something," Young asserted.

We asked him if the agency has nothing to hide, why it appears this has not been a transparent process.

"It's a personnel matter at this time and of course those are very confidential, even the Board of Commissioners is not privy to all of that information," Young stated.

Even almost a month later, Young doesn't know when that information will be made public. He did, however, maintain this about these neighborhoods: "Their safety level has not gone down," he added.
