Parents charged after 11-year-old shoots himself in Amelia

Charges have just been filed against the parents of an 11-year-old who reportedly shot himself in the face in Amelia County.

Patrick and Joanna Callaway were charged with felony child endangerment Tuesday in connection with their son's shooting.

The shooting happened around 6:23 a.m. on October 9 at a home in Mannboro. Neighbors say the home is located on Oak Grove Loop.

According to the Amelia Bulletin Monitor Facebook page, two young boys, ages 10 and 11, were left alone. Neighbors say the boys are brothers. The 11-year-old was handling a 9 mm handgun, according to the Amelia Bulletin Monitor. That's when sources say the weapon accidentally fired. It was the younger boy who called 911, and reported the child had been shot in the mouth.

The boy remains at VCU Medical Center in stable condition, according to the Amelia Co. Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Ricky Walker says the parents turned themselves over to authorities Tuesday. Each was booked and released on bond.

“They've been cooperative throughout this whole thing,” said Walker.

“He is still in the hospital. He is stable and improving every day,” continued Walker.

Court documents show that both Callaways have been involved in the military for years. Patrick Callaway has been in the army for 18 years. Joanna Callaway works as an IT tech at fort lee.

Neighbor Doris Smith has been checking in with the family, bringing them food.

“They were doing alright… We can’t imagine what can happen behind closed doors,” said Smith of the many unknowns still to be learned about the investigation.

The parents are scheduled for arraignment in the Amelia Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Monday, October 21, 2013. NBC12 did reach out to the family, but hasn't received a response at this time.
