Metro Richmond Zoo expands view by adding zip-line

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The view is changing at the Metro Richmond Zoo. The staff there is announcing the construction of a Treetop Zoofari Zip Line and Adventure Park.

The park has installed a tree-to-tree outdoor adventure using a series of obstacles and zip lines. The course travels the zoo, providing new views. It also takes visitors to different parts of the park.

"You'll be able to look out over the zoo's lake and see animals- lots of varieties of antelope and there's animals going to be below you," said Jim Andelin, Director Metro Richmond Zoo. "So you zip into the kangaroo yard and you're above the whole group of kangaroos."

The longest zip is 600 feet and riders are sometimes as high as 30-40 feet in the air.

"You're beside the giraffe's yard," said Andelin. "You can see them. And when you're up you know, 30-40 feet in the air, you can see quite a bit."

We also tested the lower Jungle Explorer course, which has challenges from only 5-12 feet in the air.

Zoo officials hope this will get families coming back for another look at the zoo- certainly one you probably haven't seen before.

There are 52 different obstacles on this course- each one a new safety challenge. Officials hope to open the course to the public in the next few weeks.
