LAKE WALES, FL (BAY NEWS 9/CNN) - A premature birth caught a mother off-guard, and she gave birth to the baby Monday morning inside a McDonald's bathroom before paramedics could arrive.
Employees had to help deliver the baby.
The woman's grandmother, Barbara Albert, said Shardonnay Hill, 20, went into labor inside the bathroom.
Albert said some employees helped prepare an area for Hill to give birth.
"She said to a couple of employees, 'Go and get something,'" Albert said. "She said, 'Get some boxes, and let's flatten them out and get her to lay down. She can't have the baby over the toilet.'"
McDonald's declined a request for an interview, but a manager confirmed a few of her employees stayed on the phone with dispatch and helped deliver that baby inside the bathroom.
Albert said the baby boy, born three months early, was not breathing. At that point, paramedics had arrived and got the baby breathing. The newborn was then airlifted to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.
"I just hope and pray that the baby will be okay, because she's a young mother. It's her first pregnancy, first baby, so she's upset," Albert said.
She said the baby boy's name is Joshua Murray, but his aunt, Vanessa Richardson, said he'll likely grow up with a nickname.
"That's her favorite restaurant, and we need to call him Ronald," Richardson said.
