Police say suspect Jonathan Landon was driving this truck.
HOPEWELL & CHESTER, VA (WWBT) -
Hopewell's Police Chief says all three officers injured in a weekend shooting and chase are back home and recovering from injuries.
The officers were hospitalized after the pursuit and officer-involved shooting that began in Hopewell and ended in Chesterfield Sunday evening.
Police have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Jonathan F. Landon of Hopewell.
Chief John Keohane says the incident began just before 5:00 p.m. with a hit and run call in the 400 block of East Broadway. A Dodge Ram pickup, allegedly driven by Landon, had collided with a building.
Witnesses say Landon went to his home next- and police caught up with him there.
"Two seconds later there was a cop behind him and front of him and next thing I know they took off through the yard and up the street," said Rita Smith. "He crashed into a police officer car and kept going. Hit another one. And they were shooting at him."
According to police, Landon then began to elude officers, and collided with a responding officer's cruiser head-on, according to police. Keohane said at some point following this collision, that officer discharged a weapon in the direction of the Landon's vehicle.
Police officials said Landon then used his vehicle in "an attempt to run over a second officer" before "intentionally crashing into a third officer's vehicle." Keohane said officers at that scene also fired at the suspect's vehicle.
"The officer was chasing him and they got right here and swerved to avoid hitting the truck and the truck hit him head-on right there.," said Ashley Peyton, who could watch it all unfold from her balcony.
At some point Landon sustained a gunshot wound to the arm.
The pursuit continued into Chester where Landon's vehicle became immobilized near the 13100 block of Kingston Avenue and he was taken into police custody, then transported to VCU Medical Center. Chesterfield police officers on the scene said the suspect's injuries appeared non-life threatening.
Hopewell police officials said Monday morning numerous charges were pending against Landon.
The three injured Hopewell police officers were checked out for minor injuries at John Randolph Medical Center, then released late Sunday night. Their names are not being released at this time.
Virginia State Police is now handling the investigation.
When reached for comment, Sgt. Thomas Molnar stated Chief Keohane had asked the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Police Shooting Team to look into the incident.
We're told this is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
We also found a link to several prior charges on the Virginia Courts Case Information website, including grand larceny, trespassing, and DWI.
Several sources have also confirmed that Landon was married to a Petersburg Police officer.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Hopewell Police Department at (804) 541-2284.
