The government shutdown could impact over 300 state employees because their positions are funded, at least in part, by federal dollars.
In a note to reporters, Governor Bob McDonnell's Chief of Staff, Martin Kent, says those positions will "likely go on furlough or part-time status."
Kent also says, "critical state operations can be absorbed in the short run and should an emergency arise, those on furloughed status can be re-called, as needed."
It's important to note that these early estimates refer only to state employees and do not include the tens of thousands of federal civilian workers in Virginia already affected by the government shutdown.
