Chippenham Hospital gunfire connected to street fights

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

New details are emerging about the street fight tied to gunfire at Chippenham Hospital.

Richmond police are searching for three women, they suspect are connected to the gunshots fired in the parking garage at the hospital, Saturday evening. That gunfire rang out after at least two altercations, just blocks from the 2nd Street Festival.

VCU student Greg Deckens caught the moments following the Broad Street altercation, on his cell phone. The video shows young people scattering across the avenue. Deckens says the first fight broke out just after the 2nd Street Festival ended.

"We definitely saw the actual fight happening- hair pulling and hitting each other," described Deckens.

Deckens says police from the festival hurried to control the situation, even using pepper spray.

"The police rushed over from the festival…and sprayed the pepper spray in the air…That dispersed the crowd rather quickly," continued Deckens.

After the first incident started near 1st Street, Deckens says another fight broke out about half a block away.

"There started to be some sort of altercation happening in the middle of the street. You could hear whistles blowing," said Deckens.

Deckens describes dozens of teenagers or young adults weaving through moving traffic.

Police say a victim with minor injuries from one of the incidents was taken to Chippenham Hospital, by family. That's when more violence erupted in the parking deck.

Police say three women in a Ford Taurus followed the victim to the parking garage. A car window was smashed, then several gun shots were fired. No one was hit.

"Too much going on for little kids to be out here around that (the street altercations)," said Sukai Henderson, who attended the festival with her two young sisters.

No word on any arrests or charges just yet. Venture Richmond organizers, which run the 2nd Street Festival, stress that the altercation didn't happen during the festival, or on the blocks where the event takes place.
