Holyoke councilors face censure for comments

Posted: Updated:

HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) - The president of the Holyoke City Council says two councilors overheard before a meeting discussing the attractiveness of a pregnant colleague and insulting a political blogger could face censure.

The comments, made during what they thought was a private conversation Tuesday, were caught on an open cable access microphone.

Councilors Daniel Bresnahan and Todd McGee have since apologized for their comments, saying they were taken out of context and were not meant to be offensive.

But council President Kevin Jourdain tells The Republican (http://bit.ly/176APN6 ) that the men could be censured. He says because they are elected officials, they cannot be fired or otherwise disciplined.

Jourdain says he's also asked the city's personnel administrator to determine if the councilors' comments violated any city policies. He called the comments "unacceptable."
