Fatal shooting near VCU campus

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond Police are responding to a fatal shooting at Belvidere & Broad near the VCU campus. VCU has issued an alert after a shooting.

The university says there is no danger at this time. Police say one person is dead and a person of interest is in custody.

This all started at 7:30 Thursday evening, police say they got reports of shots fired in the parking lot of the Rite Aid where VCU students frequent every day.

Yellow tape surrounded the Rite Aid pharmacy and several blocks. Police inside and out spent the evening collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses who may have heard or seen something.

"People coming in the store...I just heard the kid yelling, 'I just want to see my dad, I just want to see my dad," said Mike Chanhiran.

Chanhiran and other VCU students inside the pharmacy said they saw a woman and child covered in blood - rush into the store in a panic - the child yelling "my dad, my dad"

Authorities won't say what relationship these two had with the man who died -- if any -- but when officers arrived, they found a man in the parking lot inside a car with several gunshot wounds.

Authorities want to be clear this shooting did not involve the college campus or VCU students and they say this is not a random act of violence.

Detectives have identified everyone involved in the shooting and say they have reliable witness accounts.

Detectives say they'll be checking out the security videos.
