With so many federal services coming to a halt due to the government shutdown, there are many other agencies that want you to know they haven't gone anywhere. NBC12 went searching for services that remain available to the public - independent of what lawmakers decide in Washington.
There hasn't been a government shutdown in years so naturally there are many questions out there - what services are available? What's open? What's not?"
Right now, all 401 national parks are closed, "national" being the operative word.
"Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfield got like 40 calls yesterday from people wondering is the park still going to be open," said state parks director Joe Elton.
It is. The 36 state parks in the Commonwealth are operated by the state - not impacted by the federal shutdown.
If you feel like boarding a train, go ahead. An Amtrak spokesman says everything is normal, at least for the next several weeks. Though the company gets federal subsidies, ticket sales and other revenue cover nearly 90 % of Amtrak's costs.
A spokesman with Richmond's airport confirms some reduced administrative manpower on the federal level but not to the point that operations are impacted at all.
Then, there's the U.S. postal system.
"As a self funded, independent agency, we are fully operational," said spokesman Michele Martel.
Though Congress established the Post Office, it is not funded by taxpayer dollars - so don't hesitate to put that letter in the mail.
Over at the Kenner Army Health Clinic at Ft. Lee, workers are reminding the public they are honoring all appointments and accepting new ones.
At Pocahontas State Park, it's also business as usual. In fact, a huge festival is planned for the weekend, something organizers say not even Congress can shut down.
