Metro Schools target bullying with new techniques

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro Nashville Public Schools is taking a more preventative approach to bullying. It's called emotional and social learning.

The goal is to create an environment where all students feel connected and thrive.

Teachers help students identify emotional triggers, then teach them how to cope with those feelings in a positive way.

The skills are weaved into every part of the school day from elementary to high school.

"They're building that classroom community, working together, working to getting to know the students in their class and building those relationships, so that if a situation does arise then they have the tools to be able to go to a student and talk about what's going on instead of bullying," said Kyla Kengel, director of social and emotional learning in Metro Schools.

MNPS is only one of eight school districts in the country participating in the program.

This November, educators from across the country will be in Nashville for a conference to learn about new techniques.

    Emergency crews are investigating, after two men were struck by a C-S-X train in Fredericksburg. Police say one of those men has died from his injuries. Crews responded to the CSX train tracks near Prince Edward Street around 3:25 a.m. Saturday, for a report of two men who were struck by a train.
