DINWIDDIE, VA (WWBT) -

A woman who gave birth to a baby in a toilet in Dinwiddie, now faces a first-degree murder charge.

The Dinwiddie County Sheriff Office charged Devin Monique Small in the death of the newborn, who was found in a toilet at a home in the Sutherland area of Dinwiddie County early Saturday.

The devastating situation unraveled at 2:15 a.m.. A call to sheriff's deputies about a woman giving birth at home, took at drastic turn.

Officers rushed to the home on the 18,000 block of Namozine Road. They were told a 22-year-old woman had given birth to the infant in the toilet. However, investigators say when they reached the young mother, the child was discovered still in the toilet, dead.

Medical examiners performed an autopsy. Three days later Devin Monique Small was charged with first degree murder, accused of taking her own baby's life.

One neighbor who says he lives a few homes down from the family, says the home is usually quiet.

"I ride through sometimes. You see people on the porch, probably on a good afternoon…But not too much going on up there," said Michael Pettaway.

Pettaway says he'd never anticipate such a tragic episode.

"Just feel for them, you know. I don't know what their situation was, or what else was going on," continued Pettaway.

Small was transferred to Meherrin Regional Jail without bond. This case is still under investigation.
