Richmond Police crack down after violent weekend in Shockoe Bottom

Richmond Police are responding after a violent weekend in Shockoe Bottom including a club brawl, a shooting, and an armed robbery. This comes less than 24 hours ahead of a public meeting to get the public's input on how to improve the area.

Planned music events at Kingdom Nightclub in Shockoe Bottom came to a screeching halt after a weekend of violence. After a fight broke out at Kingdom, police arrested 21-year-old Timothy Chavis for attempted murder following a shooting outside the club.

The incidents happened just steps away from the 17th Street Market. There was the fight inside the club on Friday night. The shooting occurred outside the club on Saturday night, all in what is a pretty well lit area.

Just a street over on the 1900 block of East Franklin Street, two men were robbed at gunpoint on Sunday.

According to Lt. Tim Wyatt, crime is actually down in the area compared to 2012, and Richmond Police are working to keep it that way.

"We're not increasing the presence per say," Lt. Wyatt said. "I will say we are re-deploying or changing our deployment to where ever the crime is. That's where we'll focus more of those 20 to 25 officers."

The City wants the public's input on how to improve the area in around the Farmers Market. There is a public meeting Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Main Street Station.
