A shooting forces a Richmond night club to shut down early and employees tell NBC12 it happened right outside the door.
Police say this happened on Walnut Alley between 17th and 18th Streets in Shockoe Bottom. One man is in the hospital. A source says police made an arrest.
NBC12 spoke to an employee at the Kingdom night club who witnessed the shooting.
Off camera, he says it was frightening – that it all started from a fight outside the club; however, he says the shooter never actually made it inside.
The only crime scene tape you'll see Sunday is for the Italian Festival - just a stone's throw away from a violent scene just hours earlier.
"Wow... I'm just hearing about it from you so I didn't know anything would happen that soon," said Grant Byas, a Shockoe Bottom neighbor.
Police tell us a man was shot just before 12:30 a.m. According to a witness it was right outside the night club. The victim was taken to VCU Medical Center where he's currently fighting for his life.
Aside from the early morning scare, Byas isn't too concerned for his own safety. He says he doesn't venture out here late at night.
"I feel really safe," said Byas. "There are cameras up everywhere and the police make their presence known. Once again, if people have that mean streak and they're going to do whatever they want to do."
Farmers' Market Manager, George Bolos doesn't want this violence to keep families and people from visiting the Bottom. That includes events like the popular Italian Festival which wrapped up Sunday.
"We're in an inner city and there are problems that happen especially at night in the inner city," said Bolos. "During the day this is a very safe venue. We have a great track record of safety here at the Farmers Market especially for our festivals."
Bolos along with other neighbors hope the only crime scene tape they'll see for a while is strictly for street festivals and events. Not violent crimes.
Police have not released a motive at this time. We also tried contacting the night club owner but have not heard back at this time.
