RPD make quick arrest in overnight burglaries

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Police made a quick arrest after two overnight home break-ins near VCU. 18-year old Daimari Clark is in custody - accused of breaking into two homes, not far from one another. One is on West Clay, the other on West Broad.

These crimes not only affect students but neighbors who've called Jackson Ward and Carver community home for years.

Lynn Kimball is all too familiar with break-ins. she became a victim last year.

"Actually just showing up and seeing the door was kicked in and just knowing that somebody had been in your house up stairs and rummaging through drawers," said Kimball.

Kimball had no idea two separate burglaries happened while she was sleeping early Friday. Police responded to the first burglary on 900 West Clay Street just after midnight. About an hour later, another call came in just blocks away at 800 West Broad Street. Soon after, police arrested Diamari Clarke just after 1 a.m.

"It's really disconcerting but I'm really glad they made an arrest in it," Kimball noted.

According to online RPD crime numbers this year, 17 burglaries have been reported in the carver neighborhood -some even on the same street and block as the early morning break-ins. It's an area heavily populated with VCU students.

"A number of them make themselves easy targets," said Doug Kleffner. "Walking around they're looking at their cell phones. They're out at 2 and 3 in the morning which is hard to understand."

"It's an on-going issue between the folks who actually live here and then the college students," Kimball noted.

Either way, neighbors just hope Friday's arrest is one step closer to a safer community. Police say nobody was hurt in either break-in.
