MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Heroes Academy teaches financial education

Posted: Updated:

You've heard of laughing all the way to the bank - well, you might just be able to do that. NBC12's Diva of Discounts just found a class you can take to learn how to better manage your money while also having a few laughs.

Larry Horsey is part financial advisor, part motivational speaker, part comedian. He started in the banking world as a financial advisor.

"I didn't like that people were normally sold products, they weren't educated on it," said Horsey.

So he and other partners founded the Heroes Academy, a financial education school that teaches people how to make and save money.

"The stuff that we don't learn in high school or in college, that we learn the hard way," said Horsey.

He tackles topics like debt, college, retirement and money growth. Not the most entertaining subjects... but his class is in stitches the whole time.

"We try and make it fun. We play games. I tell stories," said Horsey.

He doesn't sugar-coat his lectures. He explains the good, bad and the ugly of the banking industry and how you can make it work to your advantage.

"An understanding of stuff instead of avoiding it or being stressed out by it," said Horsey.

In a matter of years, more than 400 people - both online and in person - now have learned what they need to do for a more stable future.

"People that have gone through our classes, they say we changed their lives," said Horsey.

The Heroes Academy is free, but the owners suggest donating to the Make a Wish Foundation or Junior Achievement as a thank you for the knowledge you gain.
