Springfield police investigating cell phone scam

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield police are investigating after a number of Springfield residents lost large sums of money to a cell phone scam.

Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney said the police department has received several complaints from the victims over the last few weeks. Delaney says the victims have received calls on their cell phones saying that their close family members were kidnapped and would be held until the victim paid a large amount of money right away.

Delaney also said some of the victims received phone calls that their loved ones had been involved in an accident and requested the victim to send them money right away.

According to Delaney, the victims said the calls were believable because the caller knew actual names of the family members.

Springfield police are warning the public about the large of volume of victims that are being scammed by false information. Delaney said the scammers are requesting between $1,000 and $10,000.

Springfield police urge victims to tell the caller they are calling the police, then hang up and immediately notify the police department.

Anyone with further information on this is asked to call 413-787-6355 or "Text-a-Tip."

Springfield police are still investigating this.

The fate of an iconic landmark in one western Massachusetts town is in jeapordy.    The old train depot in East Longmeadow near the center of town is a very familiar sight to residents.  Built in 1876, it's image even adorns the town seal.   However, the fate of the land it sits on is up in the air, and so is the future of the depot.
