Local missionary in Kenya; group narrowly misses attack

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A woman from the Richmond area is in Kenya doing missionary work. Her church members have been in touch on Facebook and say she is helping to care for victims and their families from the Westgate Mall attack.

Just 48 hours before the attack, several members of the same missionary group from Mt. Gilead Full Gospel International Ministries were in Kenya, at the Westgate Mall.

"I heard the news Saturday," said Elder Calvin Jones Jr. "I went into tears, because thinking of the fact that we had just left the mall. As I watched it on TV, you were always looking to see if you saw anybody that you met."

48 hours before the attack, he was there, in the mall. Immediately, church members started trying to reach the missionary and church member still in Kenya.

"It was very frightening to think about the fact that somebody that you knew could be in the midst of that!" said Elder Juliette Davis, Mt. Gilead Full Gospel International Ministries.

Thankfully, church members were able to confirm quickly on Facebook that she was ok, but many church members of the Nairobi church where they were serving, suffered tremendous loss.

"The church where she is actually assigned as a long term member has families who lost members in the shooting," said Davis. "So, she's been able to be on site, on the ground, mobilized, helping those families."

Now, church members say their focus is on prayer and sending supplies to help their friends overseas.
