RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

We now know the contents of a metal safe uncovered in Shockoe Slip in the middle of a construction site.

The safe was found at the site of two new Marriott hotels and the First Freedom Center on 14th and East Cary Streets.

A team at Tektonics, with a representative from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources present, carefully opened the safe. Inside was a Richmond Times-Dispatch newspaper from March 18, 1963, various business documents, a metal box, a wooden drawer and several keys. Nothing inside was considered to be of historical significance.

The location where the safe was found used to be the home of a tobacco warehouse, where the General Assembly granted religious freedom to all Virginians in 1786.
