CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Chesterfield police have arrested a man accused of stealing a car and leading officers on a chase through Midlothian.

William R. McAlexander, 44, was arrested around 9 a.m. Tuesday and charged him with felony eluding, assault on a police officer and reckless driving in relation to the pursuit, according to Chesterfield Police.

Officers say they tried to arrest McAlexander around 10:40 p.m. at a location near Midlothian Turnpike near Chippenham Parkway. They say he was wanted on four counts of felony larceny and two counts of burglary and was known to be driving a stolen car.

Police instead tried to pull over McAlexander at Route 60 and Providence Road, when he led them on a chase that lasted about 15 minutes until he stopped the vehicle in the Robious Crossing neighborhood and took off running.
