RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - There are a few illnesses that pop up in kids that you really need to keep an eye on.

Dr. Paul Strehler makes sure his patients know the signs of croup.

Symptoms include brassy, harsh, "barking" cough. It is typically worse at night, and is more common in ages between 9 months and 5 years.

It is caused by a combination of cold viruses and weather pattern changes.

Children should be seen by their doctor for croup. Cold air sometimes helps. You can bring your child outside on a cold night for a little while or hold child in front of an open refrigerator/freezer.
