Man shot in Eastern Henrico

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -
Neighbors in one Eastern Henrico community are on high alert after police say a man was shot by two men trying to break into cars.

This happened around 3:30 a.m. Saturday in the 400 block of Penley Avenue. In the Sandston area.

It is a quiet street, rattled overnight. Neighbor, Kristen Emmerson says the gunshots woke her up.

"I heard 3 pows like pow and then pow and then boom!"

Word quickly spread that one of their neighbors was shot in the hip during a confrontation with two men trying to break into cars nearby.

The man shot had even armed himself with a shotgun before going outside - but before he got a chance to defend himself he was shot by the men who ultimately got away.

Tracy Leake said "it's scary, if they can carry a gun, and they can shoot a human being and have no remorse for that, they're grown and that's pretty scary and that's putting the neighborhood on alert."

Leake says there's been a recent rash of car break-ins on Penley Avenue.

"There were 12 vehicles at that time that were broken into all in the same evening, there were two teenagers spotted leaving my car at 3 o'clock in the morning," said Leake.
