A massive fire destroyed a home in Southern Chesterfield Thursday night. But it was far more than just the one home that was impacted.
The flames were so hot and reaching so far, crews had to douse three other neighboring homes to keep the fire from spreading. That left one family, which worked so hard to fulfill the dream of home ownership, back at square one.
Sarah Gaines has every reason to be upset.
"It just feels like a total loss," she said.
Sarah was at work. Her three children and grandchild were home when the vicious fire broke out right next door. The flames so ferocious- their home was in serious danger.
"It had significant amounts of fire through the fire and the house on the left was starting to catch fire," said Asst. Chief Robbie Dawson of the Chesterfield Fire Department.
Chesterfield fire crews had to douse Sarah's home and two others with water, and while they saved the structure of those homes, the damage left behind as seen in these pictures, was massive.
"There is water everywhere all the furniture is covered," she said. "My attic is now my second floor and my first floor is now covered in water."
That house is more than just a building to Sarah.
"I'm a single parent I worked hard to get my house," she said and all that work, "in basically in an hour everything's destroyed."
But as Sarah pulled into her neighborhood and saw the flames and smoke shooting high into the air- that building that represented everything she had overcome, was the last thing on her mind.
"I'm blessed because my children and my grandchild made it out," she said.
Now the search for a cause begins, and Sarah will be forced to start over. But despite this huge challenge- she will end her day the way she started it, with a smile, because what is most important to her, hasn't gone anywhere.
Sarah does have insurance so she feels confident she will be able to recover. She isn't the only one thankful. Despite four homes being impacted and people inside the home on fire when it broke out, not one person was even hurt.
