Richmond Police are stepping up patrols around the two universities following a string of robberies at two college campuses. Officers believe all three crimes are related. The first happened at Virginia Union, followed by two more near VCU.
Those who live, work, and attend school in the area say this is alarming. The three overnight robberies all happened within walking distance. It's not the news students at either university expected to wake up to.
"Living in Richmond, it's kind of a tough city," said student Kye Ong.
The first call for service came to the basketball courts at Virginia Union. School officials say two men robbed two students at gunpoint, demanding the student's property and money. The suspect's were seen taking off in a Chevy Impala.
"It's actually scary," said Sophia Booker who works at one of the colleges.
The calls kept coming in. Another robbery happened in the 1600 block of Grove Avenue near VCU. Then, another call to the 1500 block of Idlewood Avenue. Police say three men offered the victim a ride from the patio area at of the Brandt and Rhoads VCU dorms to Idlewood Avenue near Jones Park. The thieves beat up the victim and made off with his belongings.
VCU administrators did not taking any chances. They immediately sent out an alert making sure the entire campus knew what was going on.
The alert describes the three suspects, one wearing a gray sweatshirt with white letters. Another wearing a green hat and a green shirt with the letters "L.R.G.", possibly armed with a gun.
"If it happened up here, that's surprising to me because this is an out area because people walk around all the time around this area," said student Kiara Jordan.
"I look back every 5 minutes if I'm walking alone at night," Kye Ong added.
If you have information in any of these crimes, call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
