Wednesday marks three years since Billy Lee Maxwell was run over and killed on a dark Goochland road.
In the last three years, a roadside memorial for Maxwell has grown. Still, as far as the status of the case goes, not much has changed.
"Cold, but not closed" is how the Goochland sheriff describes Billy Lee Maxwell's case. His mother Christina has spent almost every moment of the last three years contemplating it.
"I'm a mother on a mission and I'm still trying to find out who did this to him," she said.
Someone ran over her 17-year-old son and left him for dead. He was found in the middle of Route 250 near Maidens Road in the early morning hours of September 18th three years ago.
"We want answers as to what happened that night," Christina pleaded.
Investigators have followed up on every lead. NBC12 just learned they even executed a search warrant on a car that was possibly involved but evidence collected from it did not match what was found at the scene.
The tips have been a series of disappointments.
"I get excited because I'm hoping it'll be something that'll lead to answers and then of course when it doesn't it's a downfall," Maxwell explained.
So she still works to get more tips. She hands out fliers and bumper stickers in the hopes someone can tell her who's responsible for her son's mysterious death.
"I just want to know," she added. "It's not going to bring him back but I just want to know."
Billy would've turned 21 in April. Christina thinks he would've joined the military. Now she takes comfort in his legacy living on in a baby girl. His sister named her daughter Billy Marie. She now lives in Billy's old room and helps the family move on, as much as that's possible at this point.
"We need closure to continue healing," she reiterated.
Detectives are still investigating tips. If you know anything that can help them close the case, call the Goochland Sheriff's Office at 556-5349.
