Radioactive device recovered in Dinwiddie

Posted: Updated:

A device containing radioactive material is being evaluated by state and local officials to ensure it is safe after it was found by a citizen Thursday morning.

The moisture density gauge went missing Wednesday from a job site in the 4000 block of Chesdin Boulevard. Officials originally said the Troxler moisture density gauge was stolen from a Ford Ranger pickup truck. However, a citizen says he saw it fall off the truck and picked it up.

The citizen returned the device to a business site nearby, but it turned out to be the wrong business. Workers there recognized it from earlier news reports and contacted authorities.

Authorities are now working to make sure it is safe, find out how it ended up in the road and why it was originally reported as stolen.
