September 12 RESTAURANT REPORT: roaches in an old kitchen

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Sometimes when you put a new restaurant in a old building, the old roaches come with it. That's what the owner told us happened, but he says it's under control now.

Famous Brown's Soul Food at 4935 Nine Mile Road in Henrico feeds your soul with a hot buffet and cool, live music.

"Live entertainment Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.  The best local bands and now we're bringing bands from out of town," said owner Preston "Famous" Brown.

It's had better health inspections.  But last time, it had 5 critical violations, including, the report says, roaches throughout. Our camera caught two by the sink.

Brown showed us they were removing an old walk-in fridge when the inspector arrived.

"This building has been here 50 years and its box had been broken for I don't know how many years. When you've got a box like that, you're going to get some bugs and stuff in it," he said.

Brown showed us they sealed off the floor and ceiling and showed us the $300 receipt for fumigating the entire restaurant.

"I figured it was best to take it out because that might be a nest," he said.

And he's not worried about being on the Restaurant Report.

"Yah, we're selling more food now than we've ever sold. Now I'm on Channel 12, I'm really going to bloom!" he told us.

Moving to Chesterfield, Cesare's Restaurant at 13301 Rivers Bend Boulevard had 7 critical violations, including, the inspector wrote, that wait staff were eating and handling customer drinks without washing hands in between. The manager told us it was one employee who has been retrained and that a cooler was repaired the same day. The report shows other violations were corrected during the inspection.

But no such problems have been found at Panda Express at 13340 Rittenhouse Drive in Chesterfield. It wins the NBC12 hall of fame award for acing two inspections and not having any critical violations in a year.
