Suspected burglar could be connected to other Varina break-ins

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

In eastern Henrico, a suspected burglar is caught red handed. 18-year-old Najai Stovall is in custody facing a number of charges, including burglary and grand larceny, after two break-ins in a Varina neighborhood.

NBC12 looked through the crime incident report for August and found at least three other daytime home break-ins in the neighborhood. Now police are looking to see if the man they just caught could be linked to these crimes.

It was the middle of the day when a neighbor just happened to look outside the window of her home on Wilderness Court.

"I saw this young man at my neighbor's house, he kept looking around and looking around, and then he would ring the doorbell and ring the doorbell, then he took his shirt and wiped the doorbell off." The neighbor didn't want to show her identity because she says she's the one that called police.

"The next thing I know, he's climbing through her window," she said.

As officers were interviewing her, the suspected burglar actually stepped outside and took off running. Police say they caught up with Stovall with jewelry and cash in hand.

Detectives say the house on Wilderness Court wasn't his only target that day. They say they believe he also tried to break into another home about a block away, in the 1200 block of Southbury Avenue.

"It was only God that sent me to the door, to the window at that particular time to see him," the neighbor said.

According to the crime incident report, break-ins were reported in the 1100, 1200 and 1300 blocks of Northbury Avenue. That's along with the two most recent reports on Wednesday.  Detectives are now trying to see if Stovall is responsible for all five.

Also according to police, Stovall lives about a mile away on Elmshadow Drive.

Neighbors say this is all too close to home. They tell us the neighborhood will be taking a proactive approach and may be looking into forming a neighborhood Crime Watch group.

Stovall's next court date is set for September.
