A family is seeking closure as Richmond Police continue to search for their loved one's killer more than a year after his death. Sylvester Jones was gunned down while he was just walking on the city's north side last March.
A knock on the door in March of last year turned Sherica Jones' world upside down. Richmond Police detectives were the bearers of bad news. Her father, Sylvester Jones, had been shot and killed.
"I was in shock because I'm like I just talked to him just that morning and now he's gone," she recalled.
Sherica describes her father as a joker who loved to laugh and a man who was getting his life back on track after time in jail for minor crimes. He was finally trying to make things right with his family.
"He has a granddaughter," Sherica said. "She's four. He has another grandchild on the way in October and it's sad that he hasn't spent any time with them. He will never meet his grandson."
Detective Anthony Coates says Jones was walking from the store on Old Brook Road near North Avenue around ten o'clock on March 3rd.
"A single gunshot was heard," Coates recalled. "Sylvester was seen running from around the building holding his gut and he collapsed."
Police believe this is a robbery that went bad but they aren't sure if anything was taken. They think the shot was fired and the suspects didn't have any time to go through Jones' pockets.
He later died at the hospital.
"It was just cowardice and senseless to rob this individual who barely had anything himself," Coates added.
Police say Jones was last seen walking with one or two men. Now, investigators need the public's help to identify those people and get any information on who murdered Sylvester Jones.
"If it was your father, your uncle, brother, whatever you would want to know," Sherica Jones explained.
If you know anything, you can call Detective Coates at 646-0729 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
