PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - A man is in critical condition at VCU Medical Center after he was shot Monday. According to police, the victim was driving when he was gunned down, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
Police say, the man was heading westbound on East Washington Street in Petersburg when several shots were fired. The driver then crossed the I-95 exit ramp, hit a van carrying a couple and their two small children before slamming into a motel.
The two children were rushed to the hospital but are now home safe and sound.
It all happened around 1:30 p.m. Monday. According to the motel manager, there were guests at the time of the crash but no one inside the motel was injured.
Syed Jeffry manages Broadway Inn and Suites and was in his office when he heard gun shots. "I didn't think anything of my own motel, you see. I did not think those gun shots would effect my own property."
Petersburg police the combed the totaled pick-up truck for clues. NBC12's reporter on scene saw at least three bullet holes in the driver's side door.
Officers weren't ready to disclose whether the victim was the intended target of the shooting or at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Police say, the suspect is still at large but couldn't offer a description.
