PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is sending agents to search for a manatee in the Appomattox.

The manatee sighting was captured on video by Cody Beeler, near Archer Avenue by the Temple Bridge, over the weekend. VDGIF officials confirm the animal pictured is, in fact, a manatee.

VDGIF officials say they haven't yet spotted the animal themselves, but are sending crews in boats to search the river Monday morning.

Manatees are rarely seen in the Appomattox, but they have been spotted from time to time. The creatures can come north in search of cooler waters if temperatures near Florida get too warm, officials said.
