British Soccer Camps come to Leesburg

Posted: Updated:
LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

Every year, coaches from England, Ireland, and Scotland come across the pond to teach the game of soccer to American youngsters.

Challenger Sport's British Soccer Camp is making a stop in Leesburg this week.

Nearly 20 players are taking part in the camp being held at the Lee County YMCA.

Camp leader Craig Ingram says every time he does a camp, it seems the sport of soccer has gotten more popular in the United States.

Ingram credits that to the recent success of the Men's and Women's National Teams.

"It is getting there. It's definitely getting up there. I think that's down to your  national team is doing really well," Ingram says. "And obviously, the women's national team won the [Olympic] gold [medal], which was fantastic."

Players of all skill levels are participating this week.

Ingram says it doesn't matter if the kids have World Cup dreams or just enjoy kicking the ball around, the important thing is they're getting active.

"A lot of the summer now, especially now with computers, Xbox, and PlayStations, it's good to get them out to play," he says. "Even if they're not the best soccer player, they're still running around all day and having fun."

The camp continues in Leesburg through Friday.
