State Police, the FAA and NTSB are investigating after a plane crashed in Spotsylvania County Monday night.
A single-engine plane crashed around 6:30 p.m. near a runway at the Shannon Airport. The pilot was killed in the crash. No one else was in the plane.
According to an airport source, the pilot was threatening suicide before the crash. A text alert sent by Spotsylvania Fire and EMS also said the crash was intentional.
The airport source also told NBC12 that the plane was a Cessna 172 and that it did not belong to the pilot but to the airport's flight school.
Virginia State Police have not confirmed that information.
The pilot's fiance was on scene speaking with deputies and was very distraught.
The cause of the crash is unknown at this time. Police have not yet released the name of the pilot.
