Former DWS star Young prepping for second European pro season

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The silence in Deerfield-Windsor's W.T. Henry Gymnasium is only interrupted by the bounce of the ball, the squeak of the shoe, and the brief swish of the net as former Knights star Andre Young sinks another shot.

The all-time leading scorer in DWS history is back in town working on his game, preparing for another season of professional ball.

"Usually I just come in here and just try and touch on all aspects of my game and really have a focus on one major category," says Young.

Young spent last season in Holland, earning league MVP honors and leading his Eiffel Towers team to the Dutch Basketball League's National Cup.

He says his first season as a pro was an eye-opener

"I learned a lot though," he says. "Playing with older guys who've played multiple years as a professional, and learned different tricks. You know, as a basketball player, you're always learning."

Young is back home in Albany, and training every day in the gym he starred in with the Knights.

He's joined by younger brother Trey, a rising sophomore who will play with the DWS varsity team this season.

"Mainly my shooting ability," Trey says, when asked what he's worked most with Andre. "He's really helped me with that."

"We come out here. He does the stuff I do," Andre says. "We'll play one-on-one."

Young leaves for the Ukraine next week to play with Hoverla of the Ukrainian Super League.

Not only is ready for the step up in competition, but something most in South Georgia aren't used to.

"I hear it's really cold. So I'm expecting that, expecting a lot of snow," he laughs. "As far as basketball goes, it's going to be a challenge, but that's what I look forward to."

Young says no matter where he's playing, whether overseas or back on Gruhl Court, the goal is always the same: to one day make it to the NBA.

"It may take a while, and obviously my route is a little different, but that's the ultimate goal," Young says. I'm just going to continue to work and take it year by year and just see what happens."
