Western MA residents hold rally for Trayvon Martin

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Local activists were on the steps at the federal court house on Saturday as more than 100 people were on hand for the "Justice for Trayvon Martin" rally.

The event was part of a 100-city vigil that was held across the country Saturday afternoon.

Martin was shot and killed in Florida last year, following a struggle with George Zimmerman.

Zimmerman was found not guilty of murder last week.

The Rev. Talbert Swan, president of the Greater Springfield NAACP, told CBS 3 this is much more than just reacting to a trial verdict.

"People need to understand that this is not black people playing the race card," said Swan. "This is a myriad of people - black, white, Asian, Latino - who all agree that this is a travesty of justice, and we're looking for the federal government to do something about it."

Martin supporters would like to see Zimmerman brought up on federal civil rights charges.
