Justice for Trayvon rally held in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Emotions ran high on the steps of Springfield City Hall Monday night as hundreds rallied, candles in hand, along with bags of Skittles - what was found in 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's backpack the night he was killed.

"It stabs me to my heart because there has been no justice," said Second Vice President of the Springfield branch of the NAACP Ida Flynn.

One parent in the crowd said she had to come because of her own story.

"It went right back to my son," said Emily Innocent.

Her son, Sheldon Innocent, was killed by an escaped convict in 2011.

"She didn't get her justice as a parent. I cry from a parent view, not from any political views, but from a parent view," Emily Innocent said.

Parents, members of the Springfield NAACP and local clergy took turns to talk about the killing of Martin and the acquittal of George Zimmerman.

After two days of deliberating, a six-woman jury found Zimmerman not guilty.

Despite both the defense and the prosecution saying justice has been done, the people at Monday night's rally say it's not enough.

"I was horrified, my heart broke. I just wanted to go upstairs and wake up my 2-year-old son and just grab him and give him a hug and call my dad and cry with him," said Timothy Jones, associate pastor at St. John's Congregational Church in Springfield.

The hope for those at the rally Monday is that violence across the country stops and the Department of Justice files charges against Zimmerman.

"My prayer is that this will be a rallying cry for a movement, that we won't just have a moment of excitement and anger, but transform this into something that will last for a while," Jones said.

"It's got to stop," Emily Innocent said.
