Preview of CBS 3/MassLive casino poll

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A poll commissioned by CBS 3 Springfield and our media partner MassLive and The Republican will reveal whether Springfield voters will support a casino coming to the city.

The true numbers won't come out until Saturday morning.

But political reporter for MassLive and The Republican Rob Rizzuto says it's about more than just "yes" or "no" on the casino.

"The great thing about polls like this is they can give us an idea of what's going on out there, but they don't answer all the questions," Rizzuto said.

Rizzuto says it appears most people have made up their mind one way or the other.

"It looked like a very small percentage of the people were still undecided at this point, if I remember right, it was in the lower double digits."

Western New England University's polling center conducted the poll commissioned by CBS 3 and MassLive and The Republican.

Four hundred Springfield residents likely to vote on the casino, told pollsters the pro-casino groups seemed to have a stronger reach.

"By a significant margin, people said they had been contacted by the pro-casino groups," Rizzuto said.

But Rizzuto says the anti-casino group may be smaller, but in a special election, anything can happen.

"They'll be getting the message out, that small group of people can make a difference, especially in what's expected to be a low turnout election."

And each side is taking advantage of the recent publicity they've been getting amid the controversy of signs, both pro and anti-casino, that have been popping up throughout the city.

"In a way they've generated their own news around it, so I don't think that's hurt any one side or the other, if anything they've both gained from the exposure," Rizzuto said.

According to Rizzuto, the effects of the publicity won't be known until election day.

"Only time will tell if that time of outreach will make a difference in swaying people's minds, or if this is the kind of issue where they feel strongly about it one way or another, and that's what they'll take to the polls."

The official poll results will be up on MassLive at 9 o'clock Saturday morning.

CBS 3 Springfield will also have a full report on the numbers on CBS 3 Springfield news at 11 on Saturday night.

Springfield voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, July 16 to vote on whether or not they support MGM's $800 million casino proposal for the city's South End.

MGM is competing against Hard Rock in West Springfield and Mohegan Sun in Palmer for the only Western Mass casino license.
