Thieves hit daycare center

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Square One in Springfield has had their share of troubles over the past few years. Two buildings were damaged in the tornado that ripped through downtown in 2011. Then in November of 2012, another building was destroyed when a massive natural gas explosion leveled the strip club next door. This past week, thieves hit their location on King Street.

Early Thursday and Friday morning, someone dug up and stole seven arborvitae evergreens that were donated and planted in the fall of 2012.

Kimberley Lee, vice president of advancement for Square One, admitted it may not seem like a big deal to many people. Replacement costs were estimated at close to $1,000.

Square One is a private, nonprofit organization providing education, care and transportation for residents in Springfield and Holyoke, 90 percent of whom fall below federal poverty levels.

Lee said the theft was disheartening because the landscaping at the King Street location was a gift. She also said the children they serve deserve a clean, safe environment.

According to Lee, the organization puts their focus on helping young people make good choices. She said they would gladly take back what was stolen if the thief or thieves had a change of heart.
