Answers wanted from McDonnell over Star Scientific

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

On the heels of the latest revelations about the undisclosed items received by Governor McDonnell, we went through the governor's 57-page financial disclosure report.

Using unnamed sources, the Washington Post says Governor Bob McDonnell received as much as $70,000 from Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams for a real estate company the governor owns with his sister.

The sources also tell the Post the governor's wife, Maureen, got a $50,000 check from Williams in 2011. That brings the total in gifts and loans to the McDonnell family to $145,000.

Those funds are at the center of a federal investigation.

We went through the governor's financial disclosure forms and discovered he did list that a member of his immediate family owed money to an unnamed creditor in both 2011 and 2012.

In 2011, he described that creditor as someone in "medical" services. Last year, he said the creditor was in "health care."

The form does not list any company by name. Star Scientific makes nutritional supplements.

McDonnell has said over and over that Star Scientific received no special benefits from his administration. State law requires the disclosure of any gift valued at $50 and any loans, but gifts to family members are exempt.

According to the Post, a federal grand jury is meeting this week. The state is also investigating the governor's gift reporting.
