As early as next week, we should see the first buildings go up in Goochland County's first apartment community. County leaders say the new multi-family units will spur growth in the West Creek business park.
Consider it a work in progress that's creating quite the buzz.
"We put the sign up just before the 4th of July and the second day we had the sign up, we had 30 calls, so we're seeing a lot of interest in this," said developer Wade Thompson.
It's called The Retreat at West Creek, just miles away from the Short Pump Town Center in western Henrico. Artist renderings show a 254 unit upscale development at completion.
Down the road at Sunset Grill - owners are welcoming the new addition.
"From my standpoint, it's definitely a plus for my business…I think it will bring more growth to this end of the county which we definitely need," said owner Tom McGrath.
But will Goochland County - known for its rural appeal - lose that feel?
"No, I don't think so. I think this is very restricted to this area," said Board of Supervisors vice-chair Manuel Alvarez.
He says the county only designated the West Creek area for development of apartments. But, Alvarez says there are still some 30 acres available there for even more apartments to be built and possibly more development nearby that has county leaders crossing their fingers.
"We already have some prospects for medical office, retail, to go in with the apartments so I think it's just a good start," Alvarez said.
"You can see were doing a lot of work right now. We've got several buildings getting ready to go vertical here in just the next week," Thompson added.
There are no buildings are there yet but developers are on a quick timetable preparing to welcome new residents come November. The Retreat at West Creek will begin pre-leasing next month.
