Elias Webb transferred out of Richmond jail due to sleep apnea

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Elias Webb, who was sentenced to prison for the hit-and-run death of a Richmond cyclist, has been transferred out of the Richmond City Jail due to a breathing problem.

Webb suffers from sleep apnea and requires a CPAP machine, according to the Henrico County Sheriff's Office.

Webb's defense attorney, Craig Cooley, personally called Henrico Sheriff Mike Wade to see if his client could be transferred. The Richmond Sheriff's office says it could have accommodated the machine, but the combination of cords and cramped conditions would have posed a potential safety hazard. With another option available, they asked Henrico to expedite the transfer.

The Henrico West Jail is an air-conditioned facility, unlike the Richmond City Jail. Webb will remain there until the Department of Corrections moves him into a state facility for his three year sentence.

Both the Richmond and Henrico sheriff's offices say this is not the first time arrangements like this have been made.
