Henrico candy shop serves up a helping of children's art

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

You can find all kinds of works of art at Sweet Spot, like gummy rattlesnakes, gummy chicken feet, and even giant jawbreakers.

However, if you're talking about real works of art, you can find that at Sweet Spot, too, thanks to a group of local seventh graders.

"We're a retro-inspired candy store with a modern twist," said Sweet Spot co-owner Chrissy Triano.

These days, that "twist" includes Andy Warhol, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Peter Max.

The masterpieces aren't the originals of the famous artists, but they are the originals of seventh graders from Pocahontas Middle School.

The artwork has a sweet theme.

"We came up with the idea that the kids would re-invent whirly pops or gummy bears and they would do an ad campaign based on those two candies," said Triano.

The students used famous artists as their inspiration.

Triano and her team picked out their top 15, and put them on display, showing that candy and education can certainly mix.

"They were really like an advertising agency that we had hired to work with us and it was exciting for them and for us," said Triano.

The artwork will be on display over the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, the Sweet Spot is currently featuring a new project for kids called Operation Gratitude. They can go in, eat a sweet treat, and write letters or draw pictures to send to U.S.troops overseas.
