Committee suggests council not move forward on baseball referendum

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

It doesn't look like Richmonders will get a chance to vote on a location for a new baseball stadium.

A city council committee suggested the full council not move forward with an effort to put a referendum on the November ballot, which would ask citizens whether they want to keep baseball on the boulevard.

Those against the paper said there's not enough information for the public to make intelligent votes. President Charles Samuels, who sponsored the idea, however, wanted the people to have a say.

"For so long we have been told where baseball is going to go," Samuels explained. "And every single time that happens people say 'but we weren't consulted, we want to have a say in this' and rightfully so. These are the fans. These are the taxpayers."

The full council will make the final decision on whether or not to move forward with the referendum next Monday.

Sources say, while The Squirrels are flexible, the team would prefer to stay on The Boulevard.
