(WMC-TV) - New technology will give a Mid-South duck another chance at walking.

Buttercup, a duck from Bartlett, was born with an inverted foot that had to be amputated. He used to get around with a peg leg.

Mike Garey, who works for a waterfowl sanctuary, thought of using 3-D technology to give the duck a new foot. Soon Buttercup will have a structurally strong and flexible leg to get around.

"I just kind of thought let me think out of the box and come up with why can't I just make him a real foot?" he said.

Buttercup's sister, Minnie, modeled her foot so Garey could create a 3-D computer image. NovaCopy in Nashville donated their 3D printing services to produce a plastic replica.

"The printing of his foot that I needed to make the mold took 13 and a half hours to print. So it's a pretty slow process," said Garey.

Buttercup's model is made of hard plastic. Garey will use it to cast a mold and make him a more flexible version that will slip onto his leg just like a boot.

"Buttercup's unique, he's unique, like the rest of them, and you know it's worth doing. It's worth doing to help him out," he said.

The duck should have his new foot just in time for his national television debut on the Today show. Learn more about how you can help Buttercup by clicking here.
