(RNN) - It's no secret that Samsung has already purchased 1 million copies of Jay-Z's new Magna Carta Holy Grail album to give away to its customers. However, this massive purchase prompted the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to update their rules for the digital age - which in turn will work in Jay-Z's favor.

Under the new rules, a digital album is eligible for Gold or Platinum starting on its release date while a physical album remains ineligible for 30 days, due to the fact that physical albums can be returned and digital albums cannot.

Welcome to the digital age RIAA, and welcome to automatic Platinum status Jay-Z? That's right. Due to the new rule, Jay-Z's album will attain automatic Platinum status after its July 9 release because Samsung bought all 1 million albums required.

Interestingly, Billboard is choosing to ignore the news while RIAA is celebrating it.

Jay-Z broke his usual Twitter silence on June 17 to respond to the Samsung purchase, saying:

"If 1 Million records gets SOLD and billboard doesn't report it, did it happen? Ha. #newrules #magnacartaholygrail Platinum!!! VII IV XIII"

In other Jay-Z news, he will celebrate his new release (and Platinum status) by performing atop the marquee of Manhattan's iconic Ed Sullivan Theater on July 8.

According to the New York Post, the free performance will take place after Jay-Z's appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman and will require NYC to shut down Broadway between West 53rd and 54th during rush hour. (Update: according to the New York Post, the marquee concert was canceled on July 3 due to holiday-related "fireworks and terrorism" concerns.)

Magna Carta Holy Grail features major names like Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Frank Ocean.

Avril Lavigne ties the knot

Rock couple Avril Lavigne and Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger got married in a secret ceremony in France on Monday.

Why Monday? Because it's Canada Day.

Both Lavigne and Kroeger are from Canada.

It's the first marriage for Kroeger and the second for Lavigne, who was previously married to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley.

Jack's Mannequin Live Album

Breakups are hard. The denial. The neurotic hope that surely they'll come back. The slow realization they aren't coming back.

When your favorite band calls it quits, it can be messy. You're never quite the same. Can you ever love another band as much?

Thankfully, Jack's Mannequin left us something to ease the heartache, a final musical love letter in the form of a live album.

Jack's Mannequin: Live from the El Rey Theatre, Jack's last album, features all your favorite Mannequin tunes, including Dark Blue, as well as all the emotive, electric performances on DVD.

Lead singer Andrew McMahon said he had wanted to release a live CD/DVD for quite some time, but after the band agreed to part ways, it became clear it was now or never.

"In all honesty I'm glad I waited. The two November nights that add up to Live from the El Rey Theatre are a celebration of the strange history and myriad threads woven together to create what I now carry in my heart as Jack's Mannequin," McMahon wrote on his blog.

Proceeds from the album go to the Dear Jack Foundation, which supports causes that benefit adolescents and youth adults diagnosed with cancer.

The cause is close to the heart of McMahon, who was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in 2005.

"It is a summer on a beach, a summer in a hospital and half a decade attempting to reconcile the two. Jack's Mannequin is, as I've said before, my brutal and beautifully confused 20's set to music," he wrote on Facebook.

Mavis Staples' new album features WILCO's Jeff Tweedy

Gospel legend Mavis Staples teamed up for the second time with WILCO's Jeff Tweedy to record her latest album, One True Vine, released June 25.

The two collaborated in 2010 on the single You Are Not Alone, but took things one step further in Staples latest album - which thanks to Anti Records can now be streamed in its entirety on YouTube.

The album features Tweedy on nearly every instrument except for the drums, which were played by his 17-year-old son Spencer. He also wrote three songs on the album: Every Step, Jesus Wept and title track One True Vine.

According to Staples, the latest album has brought her full circle.

"It's a totally different CD," Staples said in an interview with NPR. "It's a return to my beginning. As far as I'm concerned, it's brought me full circle. I've gone from the strictly gospel to folk to country, and here I am right back at home where I began."

Staples is a Grammy winning solo artist, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and is considered one of the most influential R&B artists of her generation.
