RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Will the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, be a drag on the federal budget or actually cut the deficit?
In a press release, Congressman Morgan Griffith claims: "The government accountability office estimated that - Obamacare-- will add to the long-term deficit by 6.2 trillion dollars."
The reporters at Politifact Virginia question that statement. In fact- they deem it "mostly false." Sean Gorman says that figure is not even in the report that Griffith cited.
"What the republicans did was they took the results of how Obamacare would affect the long term deficit under a worse-case scenario, rejected by the GAO. They took that and came up with the calculation that it would end up adding to the long term deficit by 6.2 trillion dollars, but again, there is a rosier scenario in there that assumes that the Obamacare law actually decreases the deficit over time," said Gorman.
