Earlier this week NBC12 did a story about the new reality show The Real BabyMamas of Richmond. I knew that a reality show of this type would be controversial, but I underestimated the level of controversy. Earlier this week I attended a networking business meeting and I was struck by the number of men that were aware of the show. I would say it was better than 70%.
I also received a few emails about our news story asking why we were glorifying these so called baby mamas. I had to step back and look at this show objectively and ask myself how many other shows are there on TV that people say they don't like due to the subject matter and the answer is that there are hundreds.
I personally don't find the show appealing at all and I wish it were fiction and not reality. The more important issue for me is dealing with the growing numbers of broken households and the children who in many cases are now innocent victims for life.
The bottom line is that if you don't like the show don't watch it. If you don't like the picture it paints of a segment of this community be part of the solution. But, in a free society which includes freedom of speech, they have the right to produce and air this show. And don't be surprised when you see more reality shows called The Baby Mamas of....you name the cities.
